For book renewals, patrons are reminded to call (919) 660-1100 anytime during Library hours. Books may also be renewed online using the “My Accounts” feature in the Online Catalog.
Holds may be placed on materials which are signed out.

There is a three-day grace period for books and audiovisuals. If not returned within the grace period, fines accrue from the due date. Failure to return materials or pay fees may result in suspension of privileges.
The Medical Center Librarys main book drop is located outside the front entrance of the Library on the walkway between Duke Hospital North and the South Clinics. Materials deposited in the 24-hour book drop are picked up twice a day.

Due to construction of the new concourse, the book drop in the Duke Clinic PRT lobby is no longer available. The book drop in the Sands Building has also been removed due to lack of usage.
To avoid overdue fines, please pay particular attention to the pickup schedules or return all journals, books, and interlibrary loan items directly to the Library. Audiovisuals should be returned to the Library Service Desk to avoid damaging them.
Requests from users not affiliated with Duke University must be processed through our Loansome Doc System.

Rates per request for individuals affiliated with Duke University
If charges apply, you will be invoiced at the end of the month. Payment may be made with a credit card, check, or cash. Duke departments and patrons may pay the bill with a credit card by faxing or mailing the invoice with the credit card information, which will be destroyed once the charge is made.

Self-service photocopiers are located on the Mezzanine and First Stack levels. All machines allow users to copy using their own individual copy cards. Personal cards may be purchased with cash from a vending machine on the Entrance Level. Bulk copy cards are available for purchase from Library Administration, located in Room 103 on the Lower Level. Some machines also accept FLEX cards and cash.

Printing: A copy card (purchased from the Library) is required for printing at all computer workstations.
If you would like help with doing your own search, you may request a consultation with a librarian about your search strategy or appropriate sources to include.
If you would like a librarian to do the search for you, contact a reference librarian by emailing us at mclref@mc.duke.edu or by calling us at (919) 660-1100. A librarian will ask you questions about your topic, the sources you would like searched, and how you would like your results.
No password is required if you do not want to save searches, set up autoalerts, or create a project workspace. Users must connect from a Duke IP address. You can use the Duke Web based VPN at portal.duke.edu to route your browser.
To create a personal account at Ovid to save searches, set up autoalerts, and create a project workspace, go to the Ovid Website, click on the "My Account" link in the top right corner of the page, and fill out the form.
If you have already created a new Ovid personal account, go to the Ovid Website, click on the "My Account" link in the top right corner of the page, and put in your Personal Account Name and Password.

To access library resources such as journals or databases, set the VPN's department option to Library Resources Only.

Provides a secure connection to the Duke Health Enterprise network from your home or an off-site location. Requests for access must be submitted by the user's IT manager or LAN Administrator. Users must already have a Duke Health Enterprise (DHE) account before submitting the request.

Allows you to use your Duke NetID from off-campus without having to download any software. If a resource is available via EZProxy, a pop-up window will ask for your Duke NetID and password when you click on the resource. Note: Not all resources are available via EZProxy, so you may need to download the appropriate VPN client for access.
Collections include administrative records of Duke University Medical Center departments and personal papers of individuals affiliated with Duke University Medical Center, the Duke University Health System, School of Medicine (including the Allied Health Educational Programs, and Area Health Education Center Program), and the School of Nursing.
Most books published before 1995 and journals published before 1985 have been stored in the Duke Library Service Center, located off Briggs Ave. Please refer to Document Delivery/Interlibrary Loan for more information about retrieving these items.
