The Duke University Medical Center Library is seeking applications from librarians who are interested in working in a progressive and dynamic environment. This is an opportunity for entry level and experienced librarians to become actively involved in a variety of innovative programs in an academic medical center library that serves a nationally recognized medical school and hospital. The Electronic Resources and Serials Manager participates in the selection, de-selection, and purchase of and access to the Library's electronic and print journal collections, databases, and other electronic resources; management of the serials budget; and the review and negotiation of electronic journal and resource licenses. Additional roles include keeping up to date on scholarly publishing issues and trends; supervising the work of support staff; participating in goal setting; and serving as a member of the Library's planning and management groups.
Major Duties:
- Coordinates and manages the evaluation and selection of electronic and print journal titles for acquisition or cancellation, and chairs the Library's Journal Review Committee.
- Participates in product reviews and comparative reviews of databases and other electronic resources.
- Ensures the quality and integrity of the serials acquisition control modules in the integrated library system as well as management systems designed specifically for electronic journals.
- Participates on the Collection Development Committee as representative for serial resources.
- Monitors faculty research interests to guide collection development.
- Directs the procurement, processing and binding of the Library's currently received journal subscriptions to ensure timely access to the literature for patrons and staff.
- Supervises Library Associate position that works with serials and acquisitions.
- Tracks publication trends and pricing policies, particularly among the major European biomedical publishers, and notifies Library Administration of major issues or concerns.
- Maintains up to date knowledge of and keeps Library Administration informed on the range of services provided by serial agents.
- Works with the Associate Director of Collection Development in the preparation and allocation of the Library's serials budget, and oversees ongoing expenditures.
- Maintains links to electronic journals through PubMed, SFX, the OPAC, and other relevant databases.
- Identifies and registers electronic journals relevant to the Library's collecting interests. Integrates them into existing collections and services, and creates ways of accessing them.
- Maintains a page on the Library's Website of available titles, current URL's and other e-journal resources.
Works with the Associate Director of Collection Development on the review and negotiation of licenses for electronic journals. - Maintains current knowledge on scholarly publishing issues and trends.
- Provides background information and advice to the Library's representative on the TRLN Electronic Resources Committee and Collections Council.
- Answers queries from patrons and staff regarding the Library's serials collections and access matters for electronic journals.
- Provides accurate and timely bibliographic descriptions of the Library's electronic and print journals.
- Participates in the evaluation of service requirements for automated journal control modules, and makes recommendations regarding their implementation in the Library.
- Maintains business relationships with -- and gauges the performance of -- journal vendors, agents, and dealers.
- Works with Associate Director of Collection Development to evaluate gifts of journals and their dispensation, as appropriate, to the Library's collection, to other libraries, or for sale.
- Prepares reports, charts, and graphs in support of technical services functions and other Library activities as requested by the Library administration.
- Updates holdings information in SERHOLD, DOCLINE, OCLC and other national databases.
- Coordinates activities of departmental staff and ensures they are aligned with Library priorities and resources.
- Provides coaching, encouragement, and feedback for and conducts regular performance appraisals of departmental staff.
- Participates as a member of the Medical Center Library Council, contributing to strategic planning, budgeting, personnel, and policy decisions.
- Actively participates in the Library's management team, committees, and task forces.

Qualifications
- Promotes opportunities for training and continuing education for department staff to enhance their expertise in relevant areas.
- Encourages participation by department members in library-wide activities and projects, both to enhance their view of the larger library picture and to apply their knowledge and expertise to library problems outside the department.
- Manages personnel issues and problems for the department, assists in interpretation of Duke policies, and provide supervision to ensure compliance with these policies.
- Ensures collection and reporting of departmental statistics.
- Serves on library task forces and committees and represents the Medical Center Library externally.
- Demonstrates desirable work skills as described in the PEP Behavior Guidelines for Customer Focus, Teamwork, Creative Problem-Solving, Continuous Learning, Diversity, Strategic Communication, and Performance Management; the MCL Expectations for Professional Staff; and the MCL Supervisor/Management Performance Guidelines.
Education/Experience
Required:
- Masters in Library/Information Science or equivalent combination of other education and experience.
Preferred:
- ALA accredited degree
- Membership in the Academy of Health Information Professionals
- Experience in a health science or sciences library
- Experience in a serials department

Salary
Salary and rank is dependent on qualifications and experience. Minimum salary: $43,000
