The Medical Center Library provides a stimulating and dynamic work environment for those interested in information and library services and technology. Many of our paraprofessional positions provide on the job training for library and technology related tasks. Duke University Medical Center Library is seeking a dynamic and service-oriented librarian for the position of Information and Education Services Librarian. This position supports the application of evidence-based practice in the Medical Center; develops and teaches information management educational programs; applies Web-based technology to the delivery of services, provides leadership on special projects; and assists patrons in locating accurate and timely information in support of quality clinical care, research, and education.
This is a permanent half-time position. Extra hours may be available through October 2010.
Responsibilities
- Incorporates sound instructional design principles in developing customized and innovative approaches for information education and training.
- Teaches database searching and other information management classes to students, clinicians, researchers, faculty, and staff.
- Offers in-depth research consultations in the Library, Medical Center, and Health System.
- Develops and updates interactive online tutorials for information education and training.
- Provides reference and information services via phone, email, IM, and other communication media.
- Performs mediated database and Internet searches.
- Evaluates and recommends electronic resources.
- Provides leadership by coordinating Medical Center Library projects and initiatives.
- Actively participates in the Library’s management team, committees, and task forces and represents the Library on campus committees and task forces.
- Approaches projects and planning with a broad vision of library services and considers innovative and alternative approaches to traditional services and resources.

Qualifications Required:ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library or Information Science and knowledge of library instruction and education services, information and reference services, database searching strategies, Web pages and online tutorials, and project management.
Customer-service orientation; excellent organizational and communication skills; ability to work effectively with a diverse clientele; ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment; initiative to acquire new skills; flexibility with assignments; ability to set priorities and lead projects; and knowledge of principles for searching and evaluating electronic resources.
Computer skills: Working knowledge of MS Office programs.
Prefered:Work experience in a health sciences information environment (including library field work or internships) and/or direct experience in two or more of the required qualifications.
Knowledge of health sciences information resources, knowledge of pedagogy and instructional design principles, familiarity with health sciences disciplines; and a broad understanding of trends in academic medical libraries.
Computer skills: Graphics and Web authoring software, citation management programs such as EndNote and RefWorks.

General Description:This position is responsible for performing routine clerical activities associated with checking records against source documents, screening phone calls, and sorting messages.
Major Duties:
- Screen and direct calls, greet visitors, and provide information and directions as appropriate
- Answer phone by third ring; take complete and accurate phone messages in a courteous manner
- Look up and acknowledge visitor upon entrance into reception area
- Receive and sign for deliveries for external delivery services such as UPS
- Prepare mail for pickup by outside vendors such as UPS
- Screen, sort and distribute all incoming and interdepartmental mail twice daily
- File and retrieve records in accordance with established procedures and filing systems
- Research lost or missing records in accordance with established procedures
- Reconcile financial statements by the 10th of each month and notify Assistant Director of any discrepancy
- Maintain change machine including collecting money from machine at least twice a week, add coins as needed, perform minor troubleshooting and maintenance of machine, and notify Assistant Director of any discrepancy
- Process Document Delivery billing and notify Assistant Director of any discrepancy
Minor Duties:

- Issue and revalue library cards
- Insure that all inventories of consumable supplies are accurate and up-to-date
- Assist with preparation and verification of monthly billing for photocopying, MEDLINE Services and Document Delivery
- Arrange for maintenance service for library equipment as necessary
- Tabulate data as required and assemble and repair records and files as necessary
- Attend all competency and customer service training sessions and apply new knowledge and skills on a daily basis
- Demonstrate desirable work skills as described in the PPS Performance Factors for Continuous Improvement, Customer Service, Dependability, and Teamwork
Education/Training:
Work requires knowledge of basic grammar and mathematical principles normally acquired through a high school education.
Experience:
Work requires six months of clerical or general office support experience to become familiar with activities involved in providing routine clerical support or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
