The Medical Center Library provides a stimulating and dynamic work environment for those interested in information and library services and technology. Many of our paraprofessional positions provide on the job training for library and technology related tasks. Our systems and professional library staff positions participate in a variety of new initiatives and special projects, as well as supporting traditional IT and library functions.

This position translates operational needs and projects into IT solutions and support. The position plays a key role in developing and maintaining the Medical Center Library & Archives' (MCL&A;) Web and Intranet sites. The position is also responsible for working with other IT staff to ensure stable, secure, and up-to-date networks, servers, and other technologies to support Library & Archives operations and patron services, and for assisting in the management of Information Technology Services and the resources assigned to that unit. Additional roles include coordinating the work of ITS staff, working as a primary partner in setting and achieving the goals of the MCL&A;, and serving as a member of planning and management groups.
Major Duties:
- Participates in planning and project teams and identifies IT solutions to support initiatives and solve work-flow issues.
- Identifies short and long-term systems needs for the Library and Archives, including capital budget requests, software, and hardware purchases.
- Manages the ITS department, coordinating the work of IT staff, and assisting in the oversight of resources assigned to ITS.
- Coordinates departmental workload and special projects, such as system upgrades including maintenance of stable networks and servers.
- Oversees and manages technical aspects of departmental Websites and Intranet platforms, including involvement in Website design, functionality, interfaces and databases.
- Identifies training needs for staff and works with others on developing educational programs and instructional materials.
- Ensures compliance with University security, confidentiality, and upgrade requirements for computer systems and completes required reports as necessary.
- Consults on connectivity and technical issues related to external information resources and vendors, such as Ovid.
- Researches and makes recommendations on the implementation of new technologies and software applications.
- Collaborates with other IT units within School of Medicine, Perkins Library, and campus and Duke Health Technologies Services (DHTS) on system and access issues, and services to patrons as well as special projects.
- Contributes to strategic planning, budget, personnel, and policy decisions.
- Works with Director to ensure security of technology solutions:
- For information systems under direct control: Author, implement, execute, and periodically update System Security, Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Plans to be consistent with Duke Medicine policies and standards regarding security and HIPAA compliance. For information systems that are not under your direct control, but impact the security of an information system for which you do control, ensure that an OLA is executed.
- Design, implement, maintain, upgrade, and patch systems to be compliant with Duke Medicine security policies and standards regarding protection from external and internal security attacks. (Regularly review a reliable method to receive notices of new security patches for all information system components administered. Implement critical and urgent patches within 72 hours of a patch being available, including testing)
- Administer, validate, and review user and system accounts, access controls, audit logs to maximize system security and data confidentiality.
- Research and remediate generic and system-specific vulnerabilities.
- Maintain detailed, on-line inventory of all departmental computers and mobile devices. (Inventory data should be maintained on a real time basis. All retired devices need to go to Duke Surplus. Inventory data should be entered/ported to the Remedy Asset Management module.)
- Develop and generate status reports related to each job expectation to be included in a monthly report generated to DHTS SoM/SoN IT Security Office and DHTS Academic Support Director for review and inclusion in a monthly SoM rollup report. A standardized report template to be provided by DHTS.
- Perform a yearly review of departmental 'unit' adherence to all stated job expectations.
- Review will be done w/DHTS SoM/SoN IT Security Officer and DHTS Academic Support Director.
Minor Duties:

- Works on remote access issues and authentication systems with DHTS, OIT and other units as needed.
- Encourages participation by department members in library-wide activities and projects, both to enhance their view of the larger library picture and to apply their knowledge and expertise to library problems outside the department.
- Ensures collection and reporting of departmental statistics.
- Serves on library task forces and committees and represents the Medical Center Library externally.
- Demonstrates desirable work skills as described in the Managerial and Performance Factors for Leadership, Resource Management, Managing Diversity, Continuous Improvement, Customer Service, Dependability, and Teamwork; and the MCL Expectations for Professional Staff.
Qualifications
Education/Experience
The Library is seeking those with IT or library science degrees or equivalent training with knowledge and experience in information systems and technology.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in mathematics, computer science, library science or a computer-related field, or equivalent coursework or technical training.
- Work requires one year of related programming or analytical experience with knowledge of several computer languages or programs and/or knowledge of the specialty area for which the position is providing support.
- OR an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience in network and systems management.
- Hands-on experience in working with computers and servers is required.
- 3 to 5 years in providing and managing IT services is preferred.
- Experience working in health care or a library environment is preferred.
- Management experience or training is desirable.
The position is open to those with training in library science (MLS or MSIS) with a concentration in information technology or systems applications. If such a candidate is hired, the library will seek to change the job classification to Professional Library Staff.
Specific Skills/Knowledge
- In-depth understanding of computer technologies and network structure and management.
- Strong knowledge of operating and network systems including Microsoft and Linux.
- Knowledge of database design and development.
- JAVA and other Web scripting as part of general Website design and support.
- Ability to work with emerging as well as proven technologies.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Interest in learning about new hardware and software.
Knowledge of Drupal Web platform is highly desirable.

Salary
Salary commiserate with experience and education. Minimum salary $41,000
