Recent changes to our entrance have required that we lock the door closest to the Searle Center at 6 p.m. During a discussion with our Library Council about the confusion between the Searle Center entrance, our entrance, and access to Duke Medicine Oncology on the top floor, it was suggested that we permanently close the entrance/exit near the Searle Center lobby and use only the entrance/exit nearest to the Hospital. In the future, we plan to permanently lock and close the Library door nearest the Searle Center entrance.
CRISP (Computer Retrieval of Information on Scientific Projects) is a searchable database of federally-funded biomedical research projects conducted at universities, hospitals, and other research institutions. Maintained by the Office of Extramural Research at the National Institutes of Health, it includes projects funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Health Resources and Services Administration, Food and Drug Administration, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Health. To access CRISP, connect to our Databases page at http://www.mclibrary.duke.edu/databases.
CRISP covers projects funded from 1972 to the present and is updated weekly. It is available to the public and can be used to search for scientific concepts and emerging trends and techniques, or to identify specific projects and investigators. Users can search by a number of fields, including topic, principle investigator, and institution. For example, there are 1,009 currently funded projects in the database related to dementia, nine of which are at Duke.

The Medical Center Library and Archives staff were chosen as a recipient of the 2008 Duke Medicine and Health System Blue Ribbon Teamwork Award for their efforts in weeding, consolidating, and moving the stacks collection to accommodate office space for the Duke Cancer Center. The commemorative plaque and $1000 award were presented by Dr. Dzau in November to Deputy Director Rick Peterson, team leader for the project.
Beverly Murphy, Richard A. Peterson, Hattie Vines, Megan von Isenburg, Elizabeth Berney, Robert James, Marcos Rodriguez, and Patricia Thibodeau coauthored the article Revolution at the Library Service Desk published in Medical Reference Services Quarterly, 270(4): 379-393, 2008.
Beverly Murphy, Assistant Director, Marketing and Publications, taught Finding Online Health Information You Can Trust at Teer House on January 13, 2009. The class focused on giving community members the skills to evaluate health information on the Internet and to use reliable consumer health sites such as MedlinePlus.
An outreach grant from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine has been awarded to Megan von Isenburg, Karen Grigg, Pat Thibodeau, and Brandi Tuttle to test the effectiveness of the Kindle e-reader in the clinical setting. Students and preceptors in connectivity-poor clinics will be provided with Kindles for use in answering clinical questions and in preparing for clerkship activities. Kindles will be loaded with medical texts, practice guidelines, and a live PubMed search interface. The Medical Center Library is currently in the planning stages of the project and expects to implement it this spring. For more information, contact Megan von Isenburg at 660-1100 or megan.vonisenburg@duke.edu.

Mary Eliza Mahoney (1845-1926) was the first Black professional nurse in the United States. In honor of Black History Month, the Medical Center Library revisits Black History Month: A Medical Perspective, a popular display first exhibited in 1999. This virtual exhibit (http://www.mclibrary.duke.edu/hmc/exhibits/blkhist) contains a wealth of information including a chronology of achievements of African Americans in medicine, a section on folk medicine, and a selective bibliography.
