NIH Public Access Policy Resources

Procedures and information are still being fined tuned for the new National Institutes of Health (NIH) Public Access Policy, which became effective April 7, 2008. Below are resources to help answer some of your common questions.

Location of PMC and NIHMS ID numbers
PMC ID numbers can now be found when you display citations in the Abstract view of PubMed. NIHMS numbers can be found in the MEDLINE display format.

“PMC Journal - In Process”
It takes several weeks after publication before PMC or NIHMS ID numbers are assigned. Use this phrase if you do not have an ID number because the article is being published by a PMC journal which automatically submits the article for you.

What are the consequences of noncompliance?
According to the NIH FAQ, “Compliance with the NIH Public Access Policy is not a factor in the scientific and technical merit evaluation of grant applications. Non-compliance will be addressed administratively, and may delay or prevent awarding of funds.”

MLA Elects Leaders from Duke

Connie Schardt, Associate Director of Public Services - Educational Services, Duke Medical Center Library, is the new President-Elect of the Medical Library Association (MLA). She began her three-year term at the end of the MLA Annual Meeting in May.

A national organization with an international reach, the Medical Library Association promotes equitable and unbiased access to information for health professionals and consumers. Schardt’s varied background in hospital libraries and library networks, as well as her work as an academic librarian at Duke, mirrors the experiences of the multiple constituencies within the broad population of MLA. When asked to be a presidential candidate, Schardt said, “I felt it was important to take the opportunity to pay back the organization that had given me opportunities and support during my thirty years of librarianship.”

Murphy

In her role as President-Elect, Schardt will sit on the Board of Directors and assign MLA members to committees, juries, and task forces. Next year as President, she will represent the association at international meetings, attend chapter meetings, oversee board meetings, and establish priorities to move the association forward. Schardt says that she would like to strengthen networking possibilities, attract young and new members, and emphasize continuing education.

Beverly Murphy, Assistant Director, Marketing and Publications, and Webmaster at the Medical Center Library, also assumed a three-year leadership position in MLA this year. Murphy is serving on the Board of Directors, which is generally responsible for supervising the affairs of MLA, adopting the annual budget, recommending bylaws, and working to enact the President’s vision for the association.

Part of her responsibility as a board member will be to serve as a liaison to the Editorial Board of the Journal of the Medical Library Association and to the Leiter Lecture. Murphy stated, “My diversity and twenty-seven years experience working as a health information professional will serve me well in this new role.”

Finding information for the layperson about health and health services can be confusing, especially if you or someone you care about is ill.

NC Health Info (http://www.nchealthinfo.org), an online guide to quality Websites of health and medical information and health services throughout the state, makes searching easier for North Carolinians and the health care providers who serve them.

The Website focuses on major health conditions and diseases, medications, alternative medicine, as well as information on health insurance and how to manage health care. Special topics are featured each month and reflect health concerns of the citizens of North Carolina. The “Go Local” feature allows users to search by NC county or city for health care providers and services, listing everything from acupuncture to women’s health.

Información en español! (http://www.nchealthinfo.org/es/) - To assist the growing number of North Carolinians who speak Spanish, the entire site has been translated into Spanish.

NC Health Info was initially started by the UNC Health Sciences Library as a database of services. Recently, a statewide group has expanded the content to include high quality Web resources on a variety of health topics.

Duke’s Medical Center Library & Archives has been involved in this project since its inception, including identifying health care services at Duke and within Durham County, and serving as members of the North Carolina Consumer Health Initiative, the group responsible for expanding the Website. Pat Thibodeau, Assistant Dean, and Rick Peterson, Deputy Director, serve on the steering committee, which, with the support of NC State Library funding, revised the design of the site and established guidelines for evaluating and selecting Internet resources and marketing the site to NC libraries and citizens.

Medical Center Library staff members Beverly Murphy, Assistant Director, Marketing and Publications and Webmaster, and Brandi Tuttle and Hattie Vines, Information and Education Services Librarians, have also selected resources and created new subject areas for the Website.

New Archives Exhibit

Jessica Roseberry, Medical Center Archives

The Duke Medical Center Archives presents a new exhibit honoring “Women in Duke Medicine.” This online exhibit utilizes oral history interviews to explore the stories of women at Duke, particularly those who blazed trails Duke during a time when there were generally fewer women in medicine. It features biographies, transcripts, and sound clips of Duke scientists, physicians, pioneers, and leaders. Interview topics included treatment as a female in a mostly male culture, particular scientific breakthroughs, leadership, work-family balance, and many others. Jessica Roseberry, Oral Historian, Duke Medical Center Archives, conducted the interviews.

The primary impetus of the exhibit has been a joint project between Archives, which provided extensive research, and Dr. Ann Brown, Office of the Associate Vice Dean for Faculty Development, who offered guidance, contacts, and support. Either the featured women themselves or people who knew them were interviewed. Many of the interview transcripts were made possible by a generous grant from the Josiah Charles Trent Memorial Foundation.

Book Drop Locations and Schedules

The Medical Center Library’s main book drop slot is located near the main lobby entrance. A 24-hour book drop is located near one of the entrance doors of the Library on the walkway between Duke Hospital North and the South Clinics. Materials deposited in the 24-hour book drop are picked up three or more times each day.

* Duke South Clinics
Personal Rapid Transit Lobby.Pickup: Monday through Friday at 9:30 a.m.

* Duke Hospital North
PRT Lobby, Lower Level near the walkway to Parking Garage II. Pickup: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday ONLY at 9:30 a.m.

* Sands Building
Sands Building, on the Jones Building side near the rear exit door. Pickup: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday ONLY at 9:30 a.m.

To avoid overdue fines, please pay particular attention to the pickup schedules, or return all journals, books, and interlibrary loan items directly to the Library. Audiovisuals should be returned to the Library Service Desk to avoid damaging them.

The Medical Center Library staff welcomes your suggestions and comments. Please feel free to drop them in the Suggestion Box located on the Entrance Level across from the Library Service Desk.
