Google. YouTube. MySpace. Amazon. Technology has made it possible to get virtually anything you want, any time of the day or night, from the comfort of your home or office. Need to shop for that last minute Christmas gift? Go to the Internet. Need to find an illustration for an upcoming lecture? Go to the Internet. Presently, over 233 countries are connected to the Internet, and it is estimated that nearly 1.1 billion people worldwide use the Internet, according to Internet World Stats (http://www.internetworldstats.com/stats.htm). At this point, you may be saying to yourself, Thats interesting, but what does it have to do with the Library & Archives? With help in the form of a 2005 grant from the Josiah Charles Trent Memorial Foundation, Inc., the Medical Center Library & Archives (MCL&A) digitized over 500 images from its collections that documented the growth and development of the Medical Center during its first three decades. Although this project was initiated to help celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Medical Center, it provided an opportunity to create the infrastructure and skills necessary to make other types of resources available via the Internet. The 75th Anniversary image collection can be viewed at http://archives.mc.duke.edu/foundations/index.htm. In October 2005, MCL&A began using DSpace (http://dspace.org), an open source digital repository application developed by MIT, to make our digitized content available to researchers. This application enables items to be indexed and searched by commercial search engines such as Google. By implementing DSpace, we are able to provide access to more than just digitized photographs. For example, we have added the transcript of an oral history interview with Dr. H. Keith H. Brodie. In September 2006, as part of an agreement with the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS), the Medical Center Library & Archives added articles from the UHMS journal to the repository and officially launched DSpace@DukeMed (http://dspace.mclibrary.duke.edu).
In August 2007, MCL&A will launch MeDSpace (http://medspace.mc.duke.edu/vital/), which is being developed to collect, preserve, and provide access to a wide variety of digital resources developed at Duke Medicine. Built with open source software from the Fedora Project (http://fedora.info) and Visionary Technology in Library Solutions (http://vtls.com), MeDSpace has the functionality to restrict item access to selected individuals or groups, or for specified time periods. This will allow MeDSpace to host internal digital projects, as well as provide a place for Medical Center faculty and researchers to post copies of their articles. Presently there are no such articles in MeDSpace, but this is a service which the Archives will be promoting in the coming months. Eventually, MeDSpace will serve as the repository for electronic archives (data sets, speeches, etc). For more information about MeDSpace and other digital initiatives at the Medical Center Library & Archives, please contact Russell Koonts at russell.koonts@duke.edu or (919) 383-2653.

Adding links to Library resources and content can help your students access scholarly resources for their writing, research, and other projects. You can also add a link to the Librarys Ask a Librarian page, to make it easy for students to get research help by Instant Messenger (IM), email, phone, or personal appointment.
For help selecting or linking to resources, or for more ideas to incorporate the Library into your virtual or physical course, please contact Connie Schardt (schar005@mc.duke.edu or 660-1124) or Megan von Isenburg (megan.vonisenburg@duke.edu or 660-1131).
The Medical Center Library has installed a new flatbed scanner for public use in the MLEC lobby on the Lower Level of the Library. In addition to traditional one page scanning, it can accommodate landscape orientation and includes trays for scanning slides and photographs. The scanning station computer includes CD-RW, floppy, and Zip Disk drives, as well as two USB ports to accommodate flash drives. The computer has also been upgraded and now has Adobe Acrobat Professional and HP scanning software.
Additional computer resources are available in the Multimedia Studio, also located in the MLEC lobby (Room 104J). The Studio provides a place for users to work on Duke University Medical Center-related projects and consists of a workstation with multimedia creation and editing tools, a webcam, software for image editing and OCR document creation, and a high-resolution scanner. A complete list of Multimedia Studio resources is available at http://www.mclibrary.duke.edu/services/multimediastudio?tab=ware.
