Computer Workstation Changes Coming January 5th

Pat Thibodeau, Associate Dean for Library Services & Archives

More and more people are using the Library’s computers, which is a good thing! However, with this increase in activity has come an increase in the use of our workstations for personal reasons. As a result, noise from headphones, cell phones, and personal conversations has escalated. Patrons who are doing serious work are having difficulty finding quiet and secure computer workspaces to access educational, research, and patient care information.

In order to fully support Duke Medicine’s primary missions of patient care, research, and education, we are redirecting the use of some of our computers. Effective January 5th, there will be an area for general computing and another one for those who need to do research to support their Duke activities.

What will be changing?

Computers on the Mezzanine Level and in the Electronic Classroom (Rm 104, Lower Level)

Computers on the First Stack Level

General computer workstations will be available on the Entrance Level near the Library Service Desk.

Reminder: Please be considerate of others! Silence cell phones, and keep music and conversations at a low level.

Introducing Emma Cryer

Jessica Roseberry, Medical Center Archives

emma

The Library welcomes its newest employee, Emma Cryer, who joined the staff in August. Emma received her master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and worked at Johns Hopkins for two years prior to coming to Duke.

As Electronic Resources and Serials Manager, Emma is in charge of the Library’s online and print journals, including collection development, contract negotiations, and licensing issues, which she finds the most interesting. Ultimately, she would like to transition the journal collection to be as print-free as possible, since this is the way that most patrons now view journals. “My biggest challenge will be balancing today’s high costs of journals with a realistic budget,” she says.

Emma is very interested in getting feedback regarding the journal collection, so please send your comments, suggestions, and other ideas to emma.cryer@duke.edu.
