Library Hours Changing!
Expanded Hours - Restricted Access

Pat Thibodeau, Associate Dean for Library Services & Archives

The Medical Center Library has made big changes in its hours. A trial period began December 7, with a permanent change coming after the holidays on January 4. These changes will provide better access to Library resources, while creating a safer and more secure environment for patrons.

What are the major changes?
  • Library staff will be on duty Monday - Thursday until 7 pm and on Friday until 6 pm
  • A security guard will keep the Library open after 6 pm and on weekends
  • Access after 6 pm and on weekends will be restricted to Duke Medicine students, faculty, residents, housestaff, and clinical hospital staff
  • Access will require a Duke Medicine ID badge
  • If your badge does not work in the reader or if you need to use the research materials at the Library but you don't have access, you may request access by contacting the Library Service Desk staff at (919) 660-1100, Monday - Friday, 8 am - 5 pm. These arrangements MUST be made in advance.
  Library Staff on Duty
Reference Services - 9 am to 5 pm
Restricted Access - Duke ID Badge Reader ONLY
Security Guard on Duty
Self-checkout for Books
Monday - Thursday 8 am to 7 pm
Doors will lock at 6 pm for restricted access
6 pm to 12 midnight
Friday 8 am to 6 pm
Doors will lock at 6 pm for restricted access
6 pm to 12 midnight
Saturday Not available 12 noon to 8 pm
Sunday Not available 12 noon to 12 midnight

Why are we doing this?

  • Lost 7 Library staff positions this fiscal year
  • Needed to further reduce the budget
  • Ongoing demand for having longer weekday and better weekend hours
  • Surveyed students to identify desired hours and services
Why are we staffing only on weekdays until 7 pm and 6 pm on Fridays?
  • Fewer staff are available for daytime coverage due to downsizing
  • Our highest usage is during weekday business hours
  • Coverage until 7 pm will help those in off-campus locations, such PA and DPT students
Is this a permanent change?
  • Restricted access by Duke ID badge and the use of a security guard are permanent changes
  • The hours the Library will be open may vary depending on actual usage, which will be reviewed at three and six month intervals
What services will be available when the security guard is on duty?
  • All Library facilities will be available including:
        Group and individual study rooms
        Computers and PIN stations
        Book and journal collections
        Copiers and printers
  • A self-service checkout station for books will be installed in December
  • Conference room will be available if scheduled in advance
  • Computer classroom will be unlocked for study groups, upon request

PubMed Redesigned!

Megan von Isenburg, Public Services - Information Services

New changes are in effect at PubMed, the National Library of Medicine’s search interface for MEDLINE. Most of the features you are familiar with are still available, they just may be in a new place.

One notable change is that the tabs for Details, History, and Limits are no longer on your results page. Other changes include:

More details are available at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/techbull/so09/so09_pm_redesign.html.

New Login for DD/ILL System Coming in January!

Rick Peterson, Deputy Director

In order to make compliance with the Duke Health Technology Solutions policies for password security easier for the Library and for you, our Document Delivery/Interlibrary Loan (DD/ILL) system will introduce a new authentication method in 2010.

Beginning January 11th, you need to login to the DD/ILL service using your Duke Health Enterprise Active Directory (DHE AD) username and password. The DHE AD username and password are the same that you use for access to other Duke Medicine network resources, such as the Windows login, the Patient Information Network, VPN, browser, and Virtual PIN. This means you will have one fewer password to keep up with. When you change your DHE AD password, the change will be recognized immediately by our system, giving you secure access to your transaction history, personal information, and your preferences settings.

If you do not know your DHE username, or if you need help with your password, please call the DHTS Help Desk at (919) 684-2243.

How will you logon to the DD/ILL system starting January 11, 2010?

If you have any questions about the upcoming change, please call (919) 660-1100.

New Resource Guide Available for Educators
http://guides.mclibrary.duke.edu/educators

The role of a faculty member is a complex, multidimensional one that requires participation in scholarly and research endeavors, clinical practice, teaching and service. Duke University is known as an exceptional research institution, and its faculty are leading cutting-edge initiatives to transform the practice of health care. Enhanced preparation of faculty for our roles as teachers is a vital part of that mission.

As teachers, faculty are in the pivotal position of having a tremendous influence on the future development of their professions. Therefore the vital importance of pursuing excellence in our educational offerings cannot be overstated.

This Website has been created by the Consortium for Health Professions Educators to support health professions faculty and instructors at Duke in their efforts to enhance their pedagogical knowledge and skills. It provides links to information and internal and external resources to help faculty in many areas, including (but not limited to) the following:

The Website is considered to be a “living” resource that will change continually and to which each faculty member may contribute ideas, experiences, questions, resources, and so on. It is intended that this Website and the many resources it offers will help and encourage each faculty member to create effective and enriching teaching experiences, so that our learners will imbibe the best of what we have to offer. Duke University will be as well known for its excellence and innovation in teaching as it is for its leadership in research and clinical practice.
