Access Services

Combination of the following departments: Circulation Services, Document Delivery/ILL, and Stack Services. Circulation Services is responsible for the security of the collections and the building, including controlled circulation of materials, and staffing of the Library Service Desk during all hours the Library is open. Document Delivery/ILL provides access to materials located at Duke and other libraries around the country, combining the traditional document delivery/photocopy and interlibrary loan functions into one easy-to-access service. Stacks Services is responsible for timely and orderly reshelving of materials, copier maintenance (paper, toner, jams, card readers), patron assistance in locating materials, the morning and afternoon mail runs, and errands as needed by Administration or others.

Administration

Administration supports the various Library departments by providing personnel, financial, and customer and facility services. The department answers questions about policies and procedures, handles complaints, and issues photocopy cards. Administration also represents the Library on key Medical Center committees.

Archives

Medical Center Archives preserves and provides access to close to 4,000 linear feet of materials dating from the 1900s to the present. Included are legal, administrative, and historical records of administrative offices, department chairs, chiefs, and faculty of the Duke University Medical Center and Health System.

Cataloging and Bibliographic Services

Cataloging and Bibliographic Services creates and maintains MARC records for print and/or electronic monographs, journals, manuscripts, audiovisuals, and multimedia in the Library's collections, as well as Internet resources considered of interest and value to our Library users.

Collection Development Services

Collection Development Services acquires materials in various formats and works collaboratively with staff, committees, and patrons to identify high quality materials needed to support the goals and missions of the Library. The function of Acquisitions is to communicate with vendors, publishers, and other organizations in purchasing selected books, audiovisuals, multimedia, and journals in both paper and electronic formats.

History of Medicine

The staff of the History of Medicine Collections provide a full range of services for the materials housed within the reading room as well as the circulating and locked stacks. Rare and historical materials, which include monographs, serials, photographs and illustrations, medical instruments, and various realia, are made available, in a secure environment, to all interested persons, regardless of affiliation.

Information Technology Services

Information Technology Services supports the use of computers for the administration of the Library and for access to Library resources. The department maintains the Windows network for staff applications, UNIX servers to deliver electronic resources to patrons, and centralized Web services for DUMC.

Journal Services

With assistance from the Journal Review Committee, the Journals (Serials) Department selects print and electronic journals for addition to or deletion from the Library's collection. The department procures, processes, records, and preserves print journals to assure timely access for users. Staff also identify, track, and provide links to electronic journals to complement and augment the existing collection of print and electronic titles.

Marketing and Publications

The Marketing and Publications Librarian is responsible for coordinating, editing, creating, and planning library publications and marketing materials. She also assists the Information Services and Education Services departments with information desk coverage, teaching, and mediated search duties.

Public Services

The Public Services department offers traditional reference and research assistance in-person or by phone, email or fax, including topic-specific research consultations, mediated searches, database and esearch instruction, and verifications of citations. Additionally, public services staff offer pre-scheduled and on-demand courses on searching the literature, information management, and components of evidence-based medicine (EBM).
