Document Delivery/Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

The Library's Document Delivery/Interlibrary Loan Service arranges delivery of books or articles that the library owns and also borrows materials from other libraries that DUMCL does not own.

NOTE: Duke University main campus users should submit their document delivery or interlibrary loan requests either through Perkins or their department library if at the school of business or law.

Making a Request can be done electronically through the Article/Book Request Form on the Library's Website. Registration and creation of a username and password are required. Phone requests for materials are limited to emergency patient care situations only. Duke faculty, staff, and students, may also use Loansome Doc to batch journal article requests from PubMed to eliminate entering citation information manually.

Journal articles will be photocopied for a fee of $5.00 if available in the Medical Center Library stacks or online. There will be no charge for articles obtained from journals in Duke storage (LSC) or from another Duke library. There will be an $11.00 charge per article/book chapter for those obtained from non-Duke libraries, plus 10 cents per page over 30 pages. Any charges over $11.00 will also be billed to the requestor after authorization to proceed with the order is obtained. The same fee applies as noted above. See our billing section for further information.

Books from non-Duke libraries will be assessed a $5.00 fee. If a book is to be mailed to an off-campus location, a $3.00 fee per book will also be charged to cover shipping costs. See our billing section for further information. Off-campus patrons are responsible for paying mailing charges to return books to the Library and patrons are subject to the same overdue fine of 50 cents per day. There is a three-day grace period for off-campus book loans when they are returned by mail. Users may inquire about renewing books by calling Document Delivery/ILL at (919) 660-1100.

If a book is more than 30 days overdue, all privileges will be suspended until the book is returned or replaced. If the book is not returned, the patron will be charged for the full cost of the book, and a processing fee ($35), plus any overdue fines.

Rush fee: $3.00 per item/article. We make every attempt to process rush requests within 24 hours. The normal (non-rush) turn-around time is 48 hours if the Medical Center Library owns the title and the item is on the shelf and 7 to 10 days if we do not own it.
