Trent Room

Built in honor of Josiah Charles Trent, MD (1914-1948) and his combined love of books and medicine, the Trent Room houses select, rare volumes from the Trent Collection, and a variety of medical artifacts and realia from several other collections.

trent roomThe Trent Room was first constructed in 1956 in the original library, which was located in the Davison building. It was moved to its present location on the lower level of the Medical Center Library in 1975. The 1720 period room contains pine paneling removed from the Library of the Duke of Richmond in the Richmond House, Plaistow, England and glass window panes designed to complement the paneling and give visitors a feeling of stepping back in time into an English country house library.

In addition to rare monographs from the Trent Collection and a photograph of Dr. Trent, the room houses the Warner Wells Hiroshima Diary collection, old microscopes, wooden and leather pharmaceutical boxes, infant feeding dishes, apothecary jars, African medical artifacts, and a fine group of 17th and 18th century ivory anatomical manikins.

Visitors are welcome to tour the Trent Room when the History of Medicine Collections Reading Room is open. Staff are available to provide a tour and information about particular items in the room.
