Haas Prize
Dr. William Reid Haas and Mrs. Ardelle B. Haas
History of Medicine Essay Prize
Purpose: To honor the memory of Dr. and Mrs. Haas by recognizing outstanding scholarship in the history of medicine.
Eligible: 4th year students currently enrolled in the Duke School of Medicine.
Requirements: 3000-9000 word essay, excluding endnotes, on any aspect of the history of the health sciences written while the student is enrolled in medical school. Single authored. Not previously published, but needs to be publication-worthy. May have been submitted for publication. Should demonstrate a thoughtful or scholarly analysis of the topic and show evidence of the use of primary sources where appropriate.
Format: Entries should be submitted as an email attachment. Personal identification (author's name and contact information) should appear only in the email. The essay should be double-spaced with no right justification and in 12 point font size.
Deadline: April 1, 2010
Jury: Haas Endowment Committee
Award: $1200. The winner will be announced at the senior awards banquet. In the event of a tie, the prize will be split. The winner's name will be added to a plaque which is permanently on display in the School of Medicine. If none of the submissions is deemed of high enough quality, no award will be made.
