John Gerard
The Herball or generall historie of plants. London: John Norton, 1597.
|
Best remembered of all the English herbalists, Gerard plagiarized much of his work from Dodoens, the Belgian botanist. The most important edition of his book is the second, published by T. Johnson in 1633 who enlarged the book and corrected many of Gerard's mistakes.
This woodcut of the carnation or gilly-flower is taken from the Trent copy of the first edition.
