Educational Support

The History of Medicine offers a number of services to support Duke faculty and students who need to use materials for classes and educational projects. In addition to supporting history and medical courses, the History staff is glad to work with other disciplines, such as arts, sociology, and humanities. The curator can provide the following services to support teaching and learning at Duke University:

  • Selection of materials from the collection on a specific topic
  • Identification of relevant images within the Historical Images in Medicine database and other resources
  • Scheduling the reading room for class and small group meetings
  • Presentations on the use of historical materials as well as specific works in the collection
  • Orientations to the History of Medicine resources and services
  • Class tours of the History of Medicine
  • Identification of online resources for course Web pages

The staff is available during posted hours to work with students on projects requiring access to rare materials, as well as circulating and reference materials. However, we encourage you to make appointments in advance to use materials from the locked stack collections.

We are pleased to work with the faculty who wish to bring their classes to the reading room to view and use the materials from the History of Medicine locked collections. Faculty members should make an appointment with the curator, Rachel Ingold, at (919) 660-1144 to discuss the resources and services that History of Medicine can provide.

In addition to providing assistance in selecting and presenting materials for classes, we can offer instruction on conducting research in medical history. We have six tables in the reading room for use in hands-on displays. For interactive classes, the optimum size is 12-15 students. The reading room can be set up in lecture-style for a maximum of 50. We can provide a projection screen and audiovisual equipment as well as a lectern and microphone.
