EndNote can be used to capture the PMC and NIHMS ID numbers. You can also modify your existing libraries to add these numbers as you obtain them.

Below are basic instructions on how to modify your libraries and import PMCID numbers.

  1. Modify your EndNote Journal article Reference Type by assigning the Custom 6 field to NIHMSID and the Custom 7 field to PMCID.

NIHMS numbers should usually be added manually to the database as you submit your article and receive the NIHMS manuscript number. These numbers are not publicly available in PubMed until the article is indexed, which may be months after you submit your version of the manuscript.

  2. Set up filters for the PMCID numbers

Special Acknowledgement: We want to recognize and thank Emily Wixson at the University of Wisconsin Madison Chemistry Library for creating these filters and output styles and sharing them with the research community.

  3. Search by author and import records using the supplied filter.

The Medical Center Library is currently working on detailed instructions on how to use EndNote to store these numbers and add them to your citations.

In the interim, the University of Wisconsin-Madison has developed an excellent set of detailed instructions and filters to guide you through the process.
