Frequently Asked Questions
Who can place a literature search request?
Literature search requests can be placed by Duke-affiliated personnel, patients, and health professionals in the area.
How do I place a literature search request?
Contact a reference librarian by emailing us at mclref@mc.duke.edu or by calling us at (919) 660-1100. A librarian will ask you questions about your topic, the sources you would like searched, and how you would like your results.
How long does it take to have a search run?
It depends on the nature of your project. A search for a systematic review can take days to construct; a search on a narrowly defined topic can generally be completed within a day or two.
What databases are available?
The major database we search is PubMed / MEDLINE. Other major databases include CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature), Embase, The Cochrane Library, and PsycInfo. Additionally, hundreds of other literature databases in a variety of subjects are available through Duke University Libraries.
How much does it cost?
Search fees vary depending on the database searched, the time spent processing the search, and how the references are provided (e.g., in a custom EndNote library, or saved into a custom MyNCBI account). While the Library does offer a photocopy service, we can work with you on a package of services that can meet your particular research or project needs and save you time and money. Please contact us to discuss the services you need and how the Library can support you.
If you have additional questions or concerns, please contact Megan von Isenburg at (919) 660-1131 or Connie Schardt at (919) 660-1124 to see how librarians can assist with your search process.
