  • Databases

    The funding opportunities databases offered by these services cover biomedicine and other sciences, behavioral and social sciences, education, arts and humanities, and other disciplines. They include opportunities from the Federal government, professional societies, associations, large foundations, and some corporations. Databases may be accessed from computers with a Duke IP address.

      Community of Science (COS) - Includes the COS Funding Opportunities database, COS Expertise, and other features.

      NOTE: Duke users who have registered through the COS Workbench and set up a profile in COS Expertise, a database which enables scientists and scholars to share their research interests, may use the Funding Alert feature to receive weekly e-mail updates from the Funding Opportunities database.
      IRIS (Illinois Researcher Information Service) - Includes the IRIS Database of funding opportunities and the IRIS Alert Service, which enables users to receive funding alerts automatically.

      Duke's Office of Research Support provides the Funding Search Tutor which gives additional information about using Community of Science and IRIS.

  • Funding from NIH and Other Federal Agencies

    Grants.gov - A site which allows searching for grant opportunities from all Federal grant-making agencies and applying for grants online. Users may also register to receive e-mail notification of new Federal grant postings.

    NIH Grants & Funding Opportunities - This site provides regular updates about funding and contracting opportunities available from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The Grants - OER Home Page provides information about NIH extramural research grants and training opportunities; grant policies and procedures; numbers, characteristics, and rankings of awards made by the NIH; access to the CRISP (Computer Retrieval of Information on Scientific Projects) database, which describes research projects funded by NIH and other DHHS agencies; information about human subjects protection and lab animal welfare; and more.

    The NIH Contracting Information and Resources section leads to information on NIH contract awards for products and services and lists available NIH Requests for Proposals, by institute.

    The NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts is the official resource for announcing availability of NIH funds and for disseminating policy and administrative information. It includes Notices, Program Announcements, and Requests for Applications.

    NIH Roadmap for Medical Research is an initiative to transform the nation's medical research capabilities and speed the movement of research discoveries from the bench to the bedside, with specific Grants and Funding Opportunities.

    There are also links to the specific institutes, centers, and offices which comprise the NIH.


  • GrantsNet

    A joint project of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, GrantsNet focuses on providing information for scientists in early stages of their research careers on how to obtain support for research and advanced training. It includes a searchable database of funding opportunities in biomedical research and science education, funding news, tips on writing successful grant applications, and a directory of funding organizations, with contact information and links to their Websites. Users can also request e-mail updates on new fellowship and award programs. Registration is required before searching the funding opportunities database or directory.


  • Next Wave

    GrantsNet's sister site, Next Wave, is an online publication offering guidance on scientific training, career development, grant writing, and the science job market. It is published by the journal Science and the AAAS. Campus-wide access is available to Duke users through a cooperative arrangement with UNC-CH, NCSU, and NCCU.

    These resources provide links to a large number of sites dealing with research, grants, and funding. There are links to government and private funding resources; international resources; regulatory, policy, and legislative information; grant forms; and more.

      Grants Web - Funding available from local, state, federal, and international governments and private sources. Also provides an alphabetical list of foundations with links.

      Resource Guide - Comprehensive list of public and private funding assistance resources, including funding information and opportunities, publications, administrative resources, professional development and training, and electronic resources.
