A free, on-line interactive service for identifying, tracking, analyzing, and comparing statistics on hospital stays, discharges, surgical procedures and diagnostic tests performed while in the hospital. Reports are at the national, regional, and state level. Hcup database returns results from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS), the largest inhospital sample of discharge records in the US with over 1,000 hospitals reporting. Surveillance also covers the KID (Kids Inpatient Database) and State Inpatient Databases (SID) and the State Emergency Department Databases (SEDD) and others that have agreed to participate. HCUPnet data years are available from 1997; trend information available since 1993.

For each of 22 fields, the top 10 most-cited researchers are listed, according to papers published and cited during specific bimonthly updates of Essential Science Indicators data. (That is, 10 years plus each successive two-month addition of publication and citation figures, through the most recently available update.) The rankings, based on overall citations, may change slightly from one bimonthly update to the next, as new papers and new citations are added to each researcher's total.
