Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (H-CUPnet)
A free, on-line interactive service for identifying, tracking, analyzing, and comparing statistics on hospital stays, discharges, surgical procedures and diagnostic tests performed while in the hospital. Reports are at the national, regional, and state level. Hcup database returns results from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS), the largest inhospital sample of discharge records in the US with over 1,000 hospitals reporting. Surveillance also covers the KID (Kids Inpatient Database) and State Inpatient Databases (SID) and the State Emergency Department Databases (SEDD) and others that have agreed to participate. A data tool from the Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care that reflects both the amount of time spent in hospital and the intensity of physician services delivered in the hospital. The HCI lets users select a hospital or group of hospitals, either from a list, or by state and region, according to the relative intensity of inpatient care delivered by the providers. Prepared reports are given for the selected hospitals. There are three basic reports: the Medicare Spending Report; the Resource Allocation Report; and the Patient Experience Report. The information is provided primarily by hospitals participating in a national project called the Hospital Quality Alliance: Improving Care Through Information (HQA). Hospitals agree to submit and report additional quality and safety information for public reporting. It includes data on how often hospitals follow best practices for patients with heart attack, heart failure or pneumonia. The Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS), which began in 1996, is a set of large-scale surveys of families and individuals, their medical providers (doctors, hospitals, pharmacies, etc.), and employers across the United States. MEPS collects data on the specific health services that Americans use, how frequently they use them, the cost of these services, and how they are paid for, as well as data on the cost, scope, and breadth of health insurance held by and available to U.S. workers. Monthly and cummulative data on births, deaths, marriages, divorces, and infant death. Each issue covers one month and includes trends for multiple years based on samples from the population. Two to three current issues are available in full text from the NCHS Website. The data will later appear in Vital Statistics of the United States.
