Fall 2012 session runs September 24th to Nov 16th.
This course is designed to be an introduction to the process of evidence-based medicine (EBM)
and to the supporting roles and opportunities for medical librarians. A prerequisite for
this course is a basic understanding of search techniques for bibliographic databases such
as MEDLINE.
This course is approved for 20 contact hours from the Medical Library Association.
The format of the course is a combination of course material, independent readings, reviews
and exercises. In addition, students are required to participate in discussions through the
course Discussion Board. A final assignment integrating all the concepts learned during the
previous weeks is also required. The course runs for 8 consecutive weeks. It will take
approximately 30 hours to complete, depending on previous knowledge of EBM and other factors.
From the Fall 2010 evaluations: "The course was outstanding and one of the highest quality
professional development experiences that I've enjoyed. It was very rewarding to participate
in such a thoughtfully developed and flawlessly executed course and to be able to end the
course experience with such an extensive set of resources (suggested readings, etc.) to
explore beyond the course duration. I would recommend the course without hesitation and
further, I would suggest it as a model for developers of other LIS professional development courses."
This course is also approved for 3 graduate academic credits from the School of Information
and Library Science (SILS) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. SILS students
have an additional 2 weeks to finish the course and are required to complete a final project.
The charge is $405. To register for the course, contact Wake Harper (wharper@email.unc.edu) at UNC/SILS.
