EBM in Geriatrics Course
First year fellows in geriatric medicine, geriatric pharmacy residents, and advanced practice
gerontologic nursing students will participate in a course of instruction on the practice of
Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM). The primary text for the course will be Evidence-based Medicine:
How to Practice and Teach EBM by Straus SE, Richardson WS, Paul Glasziou, Haynes RB. Third Edition.
Churchill Livingstone: Edinburgh, 2005. The course will combine the use of existing online
didactic materials and in-person class sessions. Faculty
Coordinator: Dr. Mitch Heflin.
The introductory course will be divided into 9 weekly sessions on Tuesdays from 8:00am to 9:30am
beginning on October 7th. Class location is the GRECC Conference Room (C3012) at the VA.
In preparation for each session, learners will access the class website, EBM in Geriatrics,
from the Duke Medical Center Library’s website and use learning aids available there.
Participants will be asked to read the corresponding chapter from the Straus text. This
should take no more that 1 hour.
