Saving and Importing Citations from PubMed into EndNote

**Note: these instructions are designed to work with EndNote versions 6-9

Step One: Saving Citations from PubMed.
  1. Perform the search.
  2. Select references for EndNote.
  3. Change the Display dropdown menu from Summary to MEDLINE.
  4. Change the Send To dropdown menu to read File.
  5. Click Save when prompted.
  6. Change Save in Folder to EndNote (the location where EndNote is stored on your own computer).
  7. Change the name of the file to something appropriate (e.g., topic and date).
  8. Click Save.

Step Two: Importing Saved Citations into EndNote.

  1. Before importing any references, an EndNote library must be opened or created
    a. Create a new library by selecting New under the File menu.


  2. Optional (and not covered in this tutorial): Installing Journal Terms Lists.
    For each library, the Journal Terms List should be installed. This will allow the Output Styles to use abbreviations in your bibliography when these are required by a publisher.
    a. Under the Tools menu, select Open Term Lists, then select Journal Term List.
    b. Click on the Lists tab.
    c. Click on the Import List button.
    d. Double click on the Term Lists folder.
    e. Click on Medical.txt.
    f. Click Open.


  3. To import the references that were saved (see Step One above)
    a. Under the File menu, select Import.
    b. Choose file to be imported.
    c. Change Import Option to PubMed (NLM). Note, if you have not imported citations from PubMed previously, you may need to select Other filters from the dropdown menu first, then select PubMed(NLM) from the Other filters full list.
    d. Click Import.
