PubMed Tutorial

Welcome! This tutorial follows the sequential steps used to develop and execute a PubMed search. Make sure you have enough time to devote to the tutorial (25 pages, about 30 mins). After completing this tutorial, you should have a better understanding of what PubMed is, how to formulate a search strategy, how to search PubMed effectively, and how to access articles through the Library.

2008 DISCLAIMER: MeSH has been revised for 2008. You will notice that the search example steps will differ from the live screen. The tutorial will be updated.

Instructions

Move through the tutorial page-by-page using the navigation buttons on each page (pictured below). Note the hand which will indicate you must do something.

The sections at the top of each page (and to the left) are for your convenience if you need to review a specific portion of the tutorial. Make sure you are prepared to do the searching section in one sitting.

The first two sections consist of full screen instructional pages. Then the screen will split with the top portion containing the tutorial, which will guide you through a live search in the lower portion (PubMed).
