Scope note- Provides a definition of the term
Date added- If no date appears right after the scope note, then the term has been present since 1966.
(Knowing when the term was added to the MeSH Database can be very helpful, especially when searching newer concepts. Sometimes you
might have to search using the term to which the concept was previously indexed. This information will be provided below the
entry terms on the MeSH record.)
Subheadings- Topical qualifiers that are used in combination with the MeSH
terms to get at a specific aspect of that term. For example, the subheading "diagnosis" is used with MeSH terms
for diseases when the article is about the diagnosis of that disease. You can use Subheadings in your searches
to help make your retrieval more specific. For example, if you
wanted to search for MEDLINE citations for articles specifically about the pharmacological management of headaches,
you could search for the MeSH heading "Headache" with the subheading "drug therapy." It would look like this:
Headache/drug therapy
Note:We recommend the default which is to include all subheadings.
Tree structure- Displays MeSH terms in their hierarchy of related broader and narrower
terms. When searching, it can sometimes be helpful to move
up or down in the tree to find other relevant terms.
Exploding- PubMed will automatically explode MeSH terms. This means that it will search for the specific MeSH term you were
mapped to, as well as all of the narrower terms under it. See the picture of the MeSH record for more information. |
